The City of Walnut Creek is looking to hire an experienced and collaborative Technical Coordinator to work closely with Lesher Center and Center REP staff to facilitate a variety of productions. Our Technical Coordinator will support the technical needs for productions in the Lesher Center Presents Headliners series and the Center REP season, ensuring that timeline, budget, and contractual obligations are all met.
Salary
As of July 1, 2025, the salary range for Technical Coordinator (formal job class of Program Coordinator) will be $84,921 to $102,295 annually. Placement in the position and range will depend on qualifications.

About the Division
The Lesher Center for the Arts and Center Repertory Company are programs of the City of Walnut Creek’s Arts + Recreation Department.
The mission of the Lesher Center is to drive excellence, innovation, and diversity in the arts through performances, exhibitions and educational programming that establish the Lesher Center as the artistic destination for everyone in Walnut Creek and the region.
Center REP is the resident professional theatre company of the Lesher Center with a season of five to six productions a year — a variety of musicals, dramas and comedies, both classic and contemporary, that continually strive to reach new levels of artistic excellence and professional standards. The company operates on an Actors’ Equity Association LOA/LORT D Contract and hires both union and non-union actors, designers, and directors.
The Lesher Center for the Arts, which includes three theater spaces, presents events from its resident programs and supports approximately ninety event producers who rent the space each year. Together these programs present more than 800 productions and events a year, including a curated selection of visual art exhibitions at the Bedford Gallery, which collectively attract more than 350,000 patrons.
Ideal Candidate Statement
The ideal candidate for Technical Coordinator has a breadth of experience in performance genres including Music, Theatre, and Dance, and professional experience within a producing, repertory or presenting performance environment. They will have a demonstrable understanding of the entire production process from both a creative and technical standpoint, with the ability to navigate a clear path to success for productions of any size and complexity.
Representative Duties
Reporting to the Lesher Center General Manager, the Technical Coordinator’s primary areas of focus include (and are not limited to) the following duties:
- Review and negotiate technical rider obligations, provide budget estimates, establish and publish finalized schedules, and execute all technical aspects of Lesher Center Presents events;
- Support all technical aspects of Center REP’s season, including design elements, lighting, props, audio and audio-visual, in collaboration with the Production Manager, directors and designers to realize productions within available budget, timeline and resources;
- Serve as liaison between Center REP and the scenic fabrication company, overseeing successful, on-time completion of all scenery for the organization;
- Update master production schedules in tandem with the rest of the production team, providing details, crewing information, shipping, logistics, and other relative data;
- Support in planning of and participation in Load-ins and Strikes, including technical drawings and plans for load-ins (AutoCad, Vectorworks, etc.);
- Budget forecasting and expense management, production and technical planning including design elements, lighting, props, audio and audio-visual as related to the production;
- Negotiate and secure cost-effective rentals from sound, lighting, staging, backline, video, and other vendors as needed; and
- In collaboration with the Lesher Center Production Services Supervisor and Center REP Artistic Director and Production Manager, hire, schedule, and supervise production crew/labor within budget and contract requirements.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
The ideal candidates will have the following:
- Considerable knowledge of the performing arts and techniques associated with theatrical production and performance operation including set design and construction, lighting, rigging, sound, and projection;
- Knowledge of production budgetary and purchasing practices;
- Knowledge of the methods and practices utilized in planning, organizing, and coordinating multiple simultaneous projects;
- Skill in communicating effectively in English both orally and in writing, making professional presentations, and writing and developing program materials and correspondence;
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse groups of people, including internal and external customers;
- Ability to effectively utilize computer applications and technology related to the work; and
- Creative problem-solving skills.
Qualifications Guidelines
A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major coursework in performing arts and two (2) years of experience working within a producing, repertory, or presenting performance environment; or any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed in the class specification?is qualifying.
