"Energy Efficiency and Conservation" is course 3 to IAVM's Introduction to Sustainability Microcredential.

Energy efficiency and conservation are part of every venue manager’s daily operations, from how spaces are lit and conditioned to how staff are trained and events are supported. Even small, intentional improvements can lead to meaningful cost savings, reduced environmental impact, and stronger alignment with guest expectations.

This introductory course provides a high-level overview of energy efficiency and conservation within the venues industry. Participants will gain a foundational understanding of how energy is used across venue operations and explore practical, real-world strategies that can be applied in facilities of all sizes. The Course also highlights how efficiency initiatives support long-term financial sustainability while strengthening a venue’s role as a responsible community partner.

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

• Define energy efficiency and conservation in the context of venue operations

• Identify common sources of energy use and waste in venues

• Recognize practical strategies for reducing energy consumption

• Evaluate how energy efficiency supports financial sustainability and guest expectations
